A free talk with Q&A with Frank Thoms

Frank Thoms went to the Soviet Union seeking to find common ground, to connect with Russians, not to judge but to learn, not to bring America to them, but to be an American with them. He gained the trust and confidence of the Russians he befriended—and discovered much about himself. His intensity interacting with Russians led to forming deep friendships where they and he bared their souls to one another.

His first venture to the Soviet Union occurred in October 1985, Mikhail Gorbachev’s first year as general secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. In his following six trips, Frank taught English in four schools in Leningrad, Moscow, and Alma-Ata, Kazakhstan. In 1994, three years after the fall of Communism, Frank led a seminar for teachers in Yekaterinburg who would be coming to the US. He plans to return when Covid subsides.
