This month’s special Biblioteca Tour takes us to the town of Atotonilco!

First stop is the 18th century Mexican Baroque church that has been dubbed the “Sistine Chapel of Latin America” and a World Heritage site.

The church was built by the leadership of Father Luis Felipe Neri de Alfaro, who according to tradition, was called upon by a vision of Jesus with a crown of thorns on his head with blood on his face and carrying a cross. The main feature of the church is the rich mural work that adorns the main nave and its chapels, created over a period of thirty years.

We will have the rare opportunity to tour seldom-seen inner rooms of the church led by Carmen Rioja, who was part of the restoration team.

Visitors will then travel to a nearby glass etching and candle factory to see exquisite pieces being crafted by hand.

We’ll learn about the special philosophy of the owner, Charlie Hall and his commitment to the community.

In brief, Charlie employs 44 employees, 10 of whom are disabled. Our host, the owner, himself is disabled. He has extremely loyal employees, whose loyalty he attributes to his four basic rules:

  1.     If you say you will do something, do it, or tell someone you cannot.
  2.     Don’t lie
  3.     No Surprises
  4.     Do your best

Charlie’s goal is inclusion, to make great art, and create an environment where people can grow. This visit is sure to be a truly, inspirational experience!

Tequila and guacamole will be served in our host’s beautiful glassware before the 20-minute bus ride back to the Biblioteca.

Buses will depart from the Biblioteca at 1:45pm sharp and return to the Biblioteca at 4:30pm.
